Bay Area municipalities have been debating for decades whether new housing production or vigorous tenant protections is the best path to ensuring secure places to live for the region’s residents. And yet questions over the long-term efficacy of both of these solutions have largely remained unanswered. Until now.

Rarely has a major group of Californians suffered a less deserved rash of insults and attacks than the myriad homeowners often described as “NIMBYs” — an acronym for folks who may favor new developments, but “not in my backyard.”
When oranges are plentiful, oranges are cheap. It’s the law of supply and demand. The more there are, the less they cost. That’s not how it works in housing.
