A draft regional plan is projecting at least a $9.2 billion investment in transportation in Marin over the next 25 years.
The blueprint, officially called Plan Bay Area 2050+, is not a funding or legislative package. Instead, it provides a map for the region’s patchwork of government agencies to use toward addressing shared issues and goals to improve housing affordability, transportation and climate resilience.
“Plan Bay Area 2050+ takes a visionary, what-will-it-take approach to address our region’s vexing challenges,” Metropolitan Transportation Commission planner Adam Noelting said at a recent presentation on the blueprint. “And if implemented over the next 25 years, the plan will have a number of benefits.”
Those regional benefits include a 25% reduction in housing and transportation costs for Bay Area residents; a 45% increase in housing near frequent transit; a 40% increase in jobs accessible via transit, walking or biking; a 21% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions; a 60% per capita increase in the gross regional product; and a 30% increase in the homeownership rate for low-income households.
The draft plan, a project by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Association of Bay Area Governments, is an update to the region’s long-term plan adopted in 2021.
The draft plan and a draft environmental impact report were released this fall. Public comment is open through Dec. 18. An in-person and online public hearing is planned at 6 p.m. Thursday at Best Western Plus Novato Oaks Inn at 215 Alameda del Prado in Novato.
